“We are jacking in on…3…2…1…” counted down the doctor.

With closed eyes, the two agents inhaled deeply and the sleeping gas began to fill their lungs. In the final moments before their consciousness was tipped over and decanted into the dream world, the long electronic neural links that connected them to patient 136, began to light up and hum.

“Doctor… there in.” whispered the disembodied voice.

But this faint vocal reverberation was quickly drowned out by the screaming and wailing of passengers aboard a Boeing-737 that was in the middle of a hijacking. When the two agents suddenly jerked up their heads and opened their bloodshot eyes, they were greeted by the muzzle of a semi-automatic machine gun.

Before they could react, the lavatory door slid open and a large heavy-set woman shot out. She expertly tackled the terrorist flat on the ground and caused his gun to tumble out of his hands. Using a perfectly timed headlock, she rendered him unconscious.

Just as she was about to let out a big sigh of relief, another terrorist emerged from the cockpit and fired a single round from his pistol. Even though the heavy-set woman rolled out of way just in the nick of time, the bullet struck her daughter who was looking out into the aisle.

“Janine!” The mother screamed in anguish as she rushed over and held her dying daughter..

In that moment, the two agents nodded to each other, unbuckled their seat belts, and approached the grieving woman.

“Malika Jones!” One of the agents shouted.

The big black woman looked up in shock and confusion.

“Are you aware that this is all a dream? This is the same dream you have dreamed the past 3 months. No matter how many different scenarios you play out, you will never save your daughter. She has already passed away 3 months ago. It is time for you to accept this truth and wake up.” pleaded one of the agents.

“No, I am not waking up!” she screamed! “I don’t care how many times I replay this scenario in my mind. I am going to try find a way to save my girl. And even if I don’t, at least I can still hold her here in my dreams” she sobbed.

The more we resist accepting reality, the more we end up imprisoning ourselves inside the confines of our mind.
